Steingold’s Jewish Deli To Open a New Location Across From Wrigley Field

Must read

Aaron Steingold remembers his family stopping at Russ & Daughters or one of New York’s famous Jewish delis before heading to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Steingold hopes he can recreate those memories for a new generation of baseball fans on Chicago’s North Side when he opens a new location of Steingold’s of Chicago across the street from Wrigley Field.

Steingold says he’s remodeling the former home of West Town Bakery inside the Hotel Zachary and hopes to launch by Opening Day 2024. It’s a partnership with the Cubs and Marquee Development. Steingold is employing FC Studio and Wink Design to redesign the space. The Cubs season opener takes place on Thursday, March 28 on the road against the World Series champion Texas Rangers: “I’m a huge baseball historian,” Steingold tells Eater Chicago, calling out Ken Burns’ 1994 documentary series. They’ve been working on this deal for about six months. Steingold says a few of the Cubs’ top executives are regular customers at their main location on Southport which is about three-and-a-half blocks west of Addison and Clark.

The deli will serve hotel guests Steingold’s classic sandwiches, bagels, pastrami, turkey, and chicken shawarma. There are also a few new items like everything-bagel dogs on a stick, latke-tot poutine, and corned beef grilled cheese. Supported by culinary director Cara Peterson, who worked at Shaya, the James Beard Award winner for best new restaurant in 2016, Steingold’s will also serve a special soft-serve ice cream with flavors like baklava with honey-salted caramel. They don’t have an exhaust hood inside the first-floor space, so they’re a bit limited in the menu offerings.

This new Steingold’s location will also serve coffee from Connect Roasters, the company Cubs player Ian Happ has invested in, and they’ll also have a drink menu that includes nostalgic cocktails like frozen bourbon & mint egg creams.

Since opening in 2017 in North Center, and then relocating in 2021 to Lakeview, Steingold’s has taken a modern and multicultural approach to Jewish delis. That reflects the diversity within Steingold’s family, something he referred to in a post he made after the start of the Israel-Hamas War.

Steingold has plans for expanding and selling items in grocery stores and beyond. Right now, customers can buy bagels at Stan’s Donuts locations, and they operate inside a shared kitchen in Humboldt Park. But for now, the focus is on baseball — perhaps even opening a stall inside the Friendly Confines. Stay tuned for more in the coming months.

Steingold’s inside the Hotel Zachary, 3630 N. Clark Street, planned for a late-March or early April opening.
