Michella Filipowitz believes that true strength lies in our differences. As a successful businesswoman, model, and philanthropist, she is passionate about fostering inclusivity and breaking down barriers, especially when it comes to children with disabilities. In a world that often struggles with acceptance, Michella is on a mission to change perceptions and create a more inclusive society for all.
At 23, Michella’s life took an unexpected turn when she became a single mother to her son, Benjamin. Her journey as a mother was further complicated when Benjamin was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. “It was a difficult reality to face,” she recalls. “No one in my family had disabilities, so it was a completely new experience for me. But with my mother’s support, I learned to embrace this difference and understand its significance.”
Benjamin’s autism presented challenges that were not immediately visible to others. As a child with a hidden disability, defined by the Invisible Disabilities Association as a condition that isn’t apparent on the outside but can affect a person’s movements, senses, or activities, Benjamin faced unique struggles. “For Benjamin, it’s a speech delay,” Michella explains. “His brain waves don’t connect in the usual way, and while you might not see it at first glance, it becomes evident when you compare his development to that of other children.”
As Benjamin began to fall behind his peers, Michella noticed how he was often left out in social situations, particularly at school. “It broke my heart to see him playing alone while other children were interacting,” she shares. “But this also opened my eyes to the broader issue of how children with disabilities are treated in society. It made me more aware of the importance of inclusion, not just for Benjamin but for all children.”
Michella’s experience as a mother of a child with a disability has driven her to advocate for a more inclusive society. She is determined to challenge the assumptions and stereotypes that lead to the isolation of children like Benjamin. “It’s easy to judge someone from the outside,” she says. “But you never know what they’re going through. We need to move away from a culture of judgment and towards one of understanding and acceptance.”
One of Michella’s primary concerns is the way the education system handles children with disabilities. “Many mainstream schools are reluctant to accept children on the spectrum because they worry about disruptions,” she notes. “As a result, these kids are often placed in special schools, which can limit their growth rather than helping them reach their full potential.”
Michella believes that integrating children with disabilities into mainstream classrooms is essential for their development. “These children need to be part of the larger community,” she emphasizes. “They need to learn alongside their peers, to understand diversity, and to be treated with the same respect and kindness as everyone else. When children with disabilities are integrated into society, they can achieve so much more.”
Her vision for the future is one where all children, regardless of their abilities, are included in every aspect of life. “We need to teach our children to be kind, to respect each other, and to embrace differences,” she says. “My dream is to see this reflected in our schools, where every child is given the opportunity to succeed.”
To turn her vision into reality, Michella co-founded the DR Family Foundation with her fiancé. The foundation is dedicated to supporting children with disabilities, particularly those with autism, by providing financial assistance for school fees and other essential services. “I went through a lot as a single mother,” Michella explains. “The costs of therapies, tests, and treatments were overwhelming, and I realized that many families don’t have the resources I had. That’s why we started this foundation—to help those who are struggling.”
The foundation’s work doesn’t stop at financial assistance. Michella and her team are also working on opening a home for children who come from challenging family situations. “We want to provide a safe space for these kids,” she says. “Some of them are dealing with incredibly difficult circumstances, and they need a place where they can feel secure and supported.”
Michella’s journey as a mother has profoundly impacted her outlook on life. “Becoming Benjamin’s mom changed everything for me,” she reflects. “It made me realize how much we need to do to support each other and how important it is to stand up for those who are often overlooked.”
Through her work with the DR Family Foundation, Michella is dedicated to creating a world where every child is valued for who they are. “I want to help other families who are facing the same struggles I did,” she says. “Benjamin has taught me so much—he’s the reason I am who I am today.”
As Michella continues her work, she remains focused on building a community where diversity is celebrated, and every child has the chance to thrive. To follow her journey and learn more about the DR Family Foundation, visit her on social media @princessmichella.
