Announcing a New Partnership for the China Market

Must read

We’re pleased to announce that the University of Chicago Press (UCP) has partnered with Princeton University Press (PUP), and starting April 1, 2022, PUP will provide exclusive sales and marketing representation in China for the University of Chicago Press through Princeton Asia (Beijing) Consulting and supported by PUP’s Beijing sales and marketing staff.

This new partnership is bolstered by PUP’s deep market knowledge and extensive relationships with Chinese retailers, higher education institutions, librarians, and scholars, and will support marketing for UCP’s full catalog of front- and backlist print book and e-book titles, including select distributed titles. Services will include broad academic and content promotion to a diversity of readers and institutions, including curation of market-targeted lists and collections; social media and promotions to libraries, librarians, and scholars; and select, targeted publicity efforts. PUP will also oversee collaborations with local importers and marketing to e-retailers and e-commerce platforms, as well as buyer visits and in-store promotions in brick-and-mortar retail channels.

According to Princeton University Press Director Christie Henry: “PUP China has been formative to the growth and impact of our global publishing, and to our ability to build new bridges across which books and knowledge can travel. The opportunity to now share our team’s sales and marketing expertise with a peer university press, and to launch client collaborations with the University of Chicago Press, is a profound honor and a publishing joy. We are confident that the synergies of these two publishing programs, and our shared missions, will inspire incredible new experiences and meaningful cultural exchange.”

University of Chicago Press Director Garrett Kiely notes: “We are tremendously excited to be entering this partnership with Princeton University Press to enable us to expand the reach of our books in China. With the help of Princeton’s local Chinese staff and strong understanding of the market, we’re confident that we’ll be able to get our books into the hands of more scholars and onto the shelves of more libraries than ever before, enabling us to further our mission of disseminating the best scholarly research as widely as possible.”

China’s increasing centrality in the world of ideas, and growing national investment in higher education and scholarly research, position it as an optimal market for university press publishing. Princeton University Press opened its China office in August 2017 and has an established China Advisory Board of internationally recognized scholars.
